Best Places to Watch the Night Sky in Moab
Moab is one of the best places in the country for stargazing but where you go makes a big difference. The goal is simple: get away from light, find open sky, and give yourself time to actually see it. Here are the most specific, go-to spots to experience the night sky the right way.
1. Moab Winery (Spanish Valley Vineyards) — Easiest + Most Enjoyable
If you want a no-effort, still-incredible night sky experience, this is it. Located just outside the main strip, Spanish Valley Vineyards (Moab Winery) has less light pollution than downtown but still gives you a comfortable place to sit, relax, and enjoy the sky. The best move is to start with a late afternoon wine tasting (2–7 PM), stay through sunset, and let it transition naturally into night.
2. Dead Horse Point State Park — The Big View
This is one of the most iconic stargazing spots in Moab. The elevation and wide canyon views give you a massive, open sky with very little light interference.
Best spot: the main overlook or anywhere along the rim trails.
Pro tip: Stay after sunset — most people leave early, and that’s when it gets quiet and incredible.
3. Island in the Sky (Canyonlands) — Mesa Arch / Grand View Point
For a deeper, darker sky, head into Canyonlands. Island in the Sky offers some of the clearest night conditions in the area.
Best spots:
Grand View Point (wide, open, unobstructed sky)
Green River Overlook (less crowded, equally impressive)
You’ll get a true “middle of nowhere” feel here.
4. Sand Flats Recreation Area — Close + Wide Open
Just minutes from town, but far enough to escape most light. Learn more about the area.
Best approach: drive in, find a pull-off, and walk a short distance away from your car. The terrain is open slickrock, which means nothing blocks your view of the sky. It’s one of the easiest ways to get a big-sky experience without going far.
5. Potash Road (Colorado River Scenic Byway) — Quiet + Underrated
Drive along Potash Road and stop at one of the many pull-offs near the river. You’ll get canyon walls, reflections off the water, and a quieter experience than most designated viewpoints.
Best spots: anywhere with a clear view away from the road — the further you go, the darker it gets.
6. La Sal Mountain Loop Road — High Elevation, Cooler Temps
If you want something completely different, head up into the La Sal Mountains. Higher elevation = cooler air and a different perspective looking down toward Moab. This is a great option during warmer months when you want to escape the heat at night.
Best spots: any turnout with a clear view west toward the desert.
How to Actually Experience the Night Sky (Not Just Look at It)
Give your eyes 10–15 minutes to adjust. This is when the sky really comes alive.
Avoid phone screens. Even a quick glance resets your night vision.
Bring something to sit on. Staying longer is what makes it memorable.
The Move That Makes It Easy
Most people treat stargazing as a separate activity. The better move is to build it into your evening. Start with a wine tasting at Moab Winery, stay through sunset, and let the night unfold from there.
